Paul Walter’s debut EP, “Shining,” originally released on his Meduka imprint in 2015, is now available again. Featuring two original tracks and a remix by French wizard Ark (Guillaume Berroyer), Meduka 001 is an essential piece in the vinyl collection of those seeking exquisitely produced contemporary minimal music.
Paul Walter’s bass-heavy ‘Shining’ (A1) opens the EP with straightforward, low-swung drums, drenching the remaining space with hushed vocals, modular growls, and atmospheric pads. Appropriately named “Mad Voice From The Winds” (B1), Ark’s remix of Shining & Meduka is a statement to Guillaume’s irreverence as a producer: elements from Paul’s ‘Shining’ and ‘Meduka’ were reshaped, twisted, and jointly repurposed, culminating into a groovy, short (but focused) <Arkpocalyptical> ride. ‘Meduka’ (B2) closes off the EP in a somewhat experimental tone: broken beats, leftfield melodies, and odd synth sequences — showcasing Paul’s talent and reflecting his academic ventures in “Experimental And Electroacoustic Composition” at Vienna’s University Of Music And Performing Arts.
